Sunday Race Day was filled with incredible action all day long as the winners were crowned at the 2018 Avenal Sand Drags Spring Nationals in Avenal, CA. The Top Alcohol category featured the quickest cars on the property at this event, and some of the closest racing. In the final round, it would be Jake Morton pulling off a hole shot win recording a 2.48 to defeat Jim Hammond’s Low ET of the weekend 2.43. The Top Eliminator 2.95 Index class saw much of the same with incredibly close races all day long. Vickie Hall would score her second TE win of the season with an incredible performance recording 8 runs between 2.953-2.998 over the course of the event. In the Pro Bracket classes, Tommy Zavala was the huge story as he scored a double-up victory on Sunday defeating Kenny Hayes in the Pro 1 final before edging out Chris Helmuth to take the Pro 2 victory. Another great story on Sunday was Justin Adamson loaning his “Raped Ape” Jeep to his dad Chris to stay in points contention after the “Bounty Hunter” Jeep broke on Friday. Chris showed how solid of a racer he is as he put the borrowed ride in the Pro 3 Winner’s Circle defeating Jimmy Depasse in the final round. Taylor Marchant made it back-to-back Final Rounds in the Motorcycle Pro 1 class, but this time he emerged victorious defeating Blake Maness in the final round. The Motorcycle Pro 2 final saw Caleb Mings take home top honors on his 3-wheeler defeating Marcus Riedel. Junior class winners on Sunday were Hayden Brayntor (Juniors), Cruz Liston (Junior Dragster) and Sky Chaffin (Youth). **Run Sheets are now posted.**

The 2018 Avenal Sand Drags Spring Nationals continued on Day Two with plenty of great 300’ sand drag racing action. The Top Alcohol class saw no change in the qualifying order as Jim Hammond stayed atop the list with his 2.44 from Friday, while Jake Morton had the Best Run of both Saturday qualifying sessions. The Top Eliminator class also didn’t see much change in the order as Vickie Hall stayed atop the list with her 2.953 from Friday. Vickie also had the Best run of Q3 with a 2.961 while Paul Taylor was the best of Q4 with a 2.959 to move him into the #3 qualifying position. Kevin Williams is having quite a weekend with his Orange Larry Minor Motorsports-built Jeep as he backed up his Friday night 3.95 Index victory with the Saturday Pro Gambler class title defeating Grant Fraysier in the final round. Another great story was Anthony Gazzeny in his second ever race winning the Sportsman 1 class in his Grandpa Mike’s Dragster. Other big winners in today’s Sportsman bracket class action were Paul May (Sportsman 2), Mathew Wilson (Sportsman 3), Joey Weaver (Motorcycle Sportsman 1) and Dylan Holmes (Motorcycle Sportsman 2). Racing action wraps up on Sunday with Eliminations in all remaining classes.

The 2018 Avenal Sand Drags Spring Nationals got underway on Friday under sunny skies with a strong turnout of racers participating in 300’ sand drag racing. Jim Hammond put down quick time of the day in Top Alcohol recording an excellent 2.44/135MPH pass. Vickie Hall’s first trip to Avenal got off to a great start as she leads Day 1 qualifying in Top Eliminator with a 2.953 ET on the 2.95 class index. The always entertaining 3.95 Index class saw Kevin Williams put his Jeep in the Winner’s Circle defeating Wes Johnson on a hole shot in the final round 4.008 to 4.006. The Friday Pro Gambler was a repeat final of last month’s SCSDA event as Charlie Johnson and Kenny Hayes squared off, but this time around it was Johnson scoring the win in an incredibly close race. DJ Noerr topped a tough Motorcycle Gambler class field defeating Tessa Nunes in the final round. More great racing action is on tap Saturday with the final rounds of heads-up qualifying as well as Pro Gambler & Sportsman class eliminations.
