wmlead.jpgThe 2009 season at West Michigan Sand Dragway (WMSD) in Mears, MI saw some great racing from start to finish. It was quite a sight to see some new faces mixing it up at the top of the point standings along side many of the regular stand outs. Let’s take a look at those who finished at the top of the points list in 2009.

Pro Point Series

The Pro Point Series consists of all Pro classes that run on a regular basis: Pro 1, Pro 2, Pro 3, and Pro ATV. The championship battle came down to the very last race of the season where the top three contenders had a shot at the title. Point leader Steve Ewing did what was needed and took the Pro ATV race win at the final event to lock up his first WMSD Point Series championship. Steve and his Shocker Racing Snowmo-powered ATV were dominant throughout the season running consistent 4.3’s on a weekly basis. Steve was pressured throughout the final event by second place finisher Dave DeLoof. DeLoof, in his Backdraft Dragster, also cut through his class (Pro 1) at the final event and took the class win. DeLoof’s dragster is powered by an Alcohol-injected Small Block Chevy typically running in the 3.5-3.6 range. Third place finisher in the Pro Point Series was Corey Hamlin on his Pro ATV. Corey won a couple of events early in the season, then was helped later in the season as his brother Teddy took over riding duties and took a class win when Corey was unable to attend. Mark Mosher was a late round contender throughout the season in the Pro 2 class with his Big Block Chevy-powered Funny Jeep. Mark finished out the season strong with back-to-back runner-up finishes. Dylan Beld rounded out the Top 5 with his Snowmo-powered Pro ATV. Dylan had a strong start to the season, and ended up only 21 points out of first place.

Sportsman Point Series

A first at WMSD occurred in 2009 as Steve Ewing doubled up and also took home the Sportsman Point Series championship. Steve dominated the ATV class and had the championship locked up heading in the season’s final event. Amazingly, the first three positions in this point series were all out of the ATV class. Brian McWethy had a strong season finishing in second place on his Snowmo-powered ATV. Brian started off slow, but finished off the season with multiple final round appearances landing him in the top 5. Continuing on with the broken record, another Snowmo-powered ATV finished in third place, as Shocker Racing’s Matt Ewing ended up in that position. Matt came on strong late in the season and won the final two events of the season in the ATV class. Rounding out the Top 5 was a tie between Sportsman 2 class stand outs Don Parmenter and Mike Moll. Don missed a race early in the season and on the strength of several wins drove his VW-powered Buggy into the Top 5. Mike Moll was a tough competitor throughout the season in his Small Block Chevy-powered Chevy Truck. Mike was a consistent racer in the late rounds of Sportsman 2 running in the 5.3 zone and also had a lot of success in Gambler Race action in 2009.

Junior Point Series

The Junior classes have their own point series at WMSD, so there were three season champions. The Junior Dragster class had one of the most exciting conclusions in recent history. The top three racers all had a shot at the title at the final event of the season. Point leader Elise Shaffer had problems with her Junior Dragster at the final event and thanks to Tony McWethy was able to race his Kawasaki Teryx. Shaffer would face second place racer Tyler Walla in round one. Walla would run Shaffer down and take the win. In the final, Walla would face off with third place racer Alexandra Rammacher. The winner of the final round would be the 2009 Junior Dragster champion. This race was decided on the starting line as Rammacher turned on the red bulb and Walla would be the race winner as well as champion. Rammacher and Shaffer ended up in a tie for second place, just 4 points out of first. The Junior ATV class came down to the last race where Devin Reust was able to ride his Polaris ATV to the title over former class champion Caitlynn Page, who finished second. The Mighty Midgets class was pretty much all Joshua Rammacher as he rode his ATV to the class championship with a forty-one margin over second place, Tanner Hartman.
