Mother’s Day Weekend is always a big start to the sand drag racing season in Michigan, and this year was no exception. Traditionally, this weekend sees the Season Opening Test and Tune Day at West Michigan Sand Dragway on Saturday with the Spring Hill Climb at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes the day after. Here’s a rundown on the happenings from the two days of action.

West Michigan Sand Dragway - Test and Tune

The 2013 West Michigan Sand Dragway season kicked off on Saturday with lots of excitement as new General Manager Buddy Hammett has brought some big things to the table for the season, including a new Portatree timing system. Unfortunately, heavy rain with a little snow mixed in cut the day short after around an hour of Test and Tune track time. Dave Crawford in the Hookin’ N Bookin’ Outlaw Pro Stock Mud Drag Jeep ran Low ET of the day with a 3.50/87MPH blast, which was extremely impressive considering he was running Cut tires. Defending track champion Matt Ewing brought out the Shocker Racing Pro ATV and he ran a solid 3.955 on his only pass as he gears up for 2013 PTN 3.95 Index Pro ATV class action. There was a great turnout of racers on the premises, and several new cars in attendance so the 2013 Michigan Sand Drag season is looking to be one of the best in quite a while.

John Schultz made a nice pass testing for Sportsman class action in 2013.

Tim Kruszynski's new Bronco made its maiden voyage to WMSD. Tim should be a contender in Pro Truck action this year.

Silver Lake Sand Dunes - Spring Hill Climb

The Silver Lake Sand Dunes plays host to two Hill Climb events on the face of Mount Baldy each season. This year’s spring event saw Mark Mosher Jr. end up as King of the Hill after two timed rounds of action. Mark was driving his dad’s Gorilla Blown Alcohol Funny Jeep on the hill for the first time and did a great job before breaking in round two. Other highlights from the day included Bad Company Ben Dozeman’s pair of wild rides as well as Trent Everett Sr. with a very nice pass that left him just .01 behind Mosher’s quick time. The Fall Hill Climb will take place on September 8.
